Use it or Lose it
In this section I will be speaking about two things, your mind and your body. By keeping them active, you will keep them functioning properly. But if we don't use our mind and our body regularly, as in couch potato syndrome, we can gradually loose function over time. I suggest keeping your mind active, not with television which has a negative effect on the brain, but with problem solving. On easy way to exercise the brain is to add the cost of each item in your head as you put it into your shopping card at the supermarket. For keeping the body active I suggest a gentle stretching routine each and every day. Spending as little as 20 minutes can give you profound results over the years. I have heard it said that your only as old as your spine is flexible, and I see some truth in this statement.
After years of studying and practicing almost every modern form of 'yoga type' exercise routine, and taking two teacher trainings, one in Hatha yoga and one in Kundalini yoga, I have designed a stretching routine called Essene Yoga. There are no standing postures in Essene Yoga and it can be practiced by people of all levels of fitness, the very 'fit' person as well as the elderly. Essene yoga was designed to stretch every part of the body and leave you feeling energized and not tired, as many modern types of yoga/exercise sometimes do. Another type of exercise that works wonders for both the brain and the body is poi spinning. I have recently begun this wonderful art and enjoy it very much.
